Associate General Counsel – Inbound Legal

Workday’s legal department closely partners with the business, providing proactive and innovative counsel that helps drive groundbreaking products and services. We are currently seeking a motivated and experienced high-performing inbound attorney who will be responsible for providing strategic, tactical and management level legal support of all phases of inbound vendor/supplier initiatives.
We are looking for a talented managing attorney to support our rapidly growing and evolving procurement and sourcing business partner and lead an international team of legal professionals in Pleasanton, California. You will serve as the managing lawyer responsible for counseling the business on a broad range of commercial and regulatory matters including structuring, drafting, and negotiating a high volume of complex transactions. You will partner closely with the business providing trusted legal counsel and serving as lead attorney on strategic deals, delivering day-to-day advice and training, building and implementing strategies, tools and programs to improve efficiencies and empower your clients, and resolving issues that arise in existing contractual relationships.
A successful candidate will have a strong executive engagement, management, and transactional background, and be collaborative, proactive, entrepreneurial, and able to apply sound, pragmatic judgment in ambiguous situations. Limited travel, domestic and international, is required. You will be responsible for setting strategy for the team and partnering with other organizations within Workday to ensure excellent, efficient legal support for our global inbound and procurement needs. This role will report to the Deputy General Counsel for Global Compliance and Inbound Legal, and will have significant interaction with the company’s management teams.
Strategically lead a team of talented attorneys who negotiate licensing, development and procurement contracts worldwide while also being willing and able to “roll up your sleeves” and dive deep into key transactions
Successfully engage with and influence executive leadership with demonstrated judgment, business acumen, and expertise in partnering with the business and providing trusted counsel
Efficiently manage multiple tasks and responsibilities in a fast-paced and high energy environment
Effectively structure, draft and negotiate a broad range of inbound commercial agreements, including software licensing and development, hardware supply and development, strategic services, and various procurement agreements to support Workday’s and its affiliates’ global platform and products
Develop templates, negotiation strategies, client empowerment tools, and process improvements to increase efficiency and better serve client groups as Workday grows
Partner with many internal functional areas to provide strategic business and legal advice, and develop a comprehensive, long-term approach to our contracting processes and relationships with Workday’s suppliers
Resolve legal issues that may arise in existing commercial relationships
Support various Legal department projects and initiatives including foreign expansion, M&A and litigation.
J.D. degree and membership in at least one state bar (preferably California). If not licensed in California, must be eligible for Registered In-House Counsel status under the applicable rules of the State Bar of California
10+ years of relevant experience, including extensive experience in inbound licensing and procurement contracts and related IP and regulatory issues, as well as substantial exposure to a wide range of commercial agreements (e.g., marketing and real estate)
Strong drafting and negotiation skills, along with excellent business judgment and strategic thinking abilities
Effective manager capable of mentoring an international team focused on excellent results and client service
A persuasive, humble and credible communicator who can earn the trust of colleagues and senior management
Solid written and oral communication skills
Detail-orientation and ability to manage multiple transactions and projects simultaneously under deadline pressure using pragmatic judgment in ambiguous situations
A strong collaborator with the ability to influence and motivate cross-functional teams with a good sense of humor
Metrics and results oriented contributor
General knowledge of privacy laws and regulations, including GDPR, and current marketing regulations/laws (e.g. consent/opt-in requirements)
