Procurement jobs are set to increase in selected industries especially in the sectors that are service providers, including healthcare services, retail trade, and professional services. Procurement jobs require responsible workers that are able to do a variety of tasks simultaneously. In many companies, especially in the small to medium sized companies, some procurement clerks assume the role of a buyer, and perform stringent clerical functions. The general job responsibility of a procurement officer is processing the requests for material or supplies purchases. Procurement officers make sure that the inventory is checked if there are any requests for purchases, then a procurement officer would seek suppliers. Some suppliers are required to undergo a bidding process.

Among these responsibilities, a procurement officer may conduct telephone inquiries with a supplier, meeting them in person, check the facilities, and make sure that the supplier has warehouses and capabilities to supply goods at any given time. Once the supplier is chosen, orders are prepared, sent, and recorded in the company’s inventory databases. A procurement officer has to be sure that the delivery is on time and find out what issues are involved in case there are delays. When the goods are delivered, a procurement clerk checks the contents and verifies the records against the purchase orders.

In small companies, a procurement clerk is also responsible for the company’s inventory system, monitors the flow of materials, orders, requests, and performs transfer in inventory forms for accounting. The procurement clerk may use spread sheet applications to keep the records and orders materials if they are depleted.

Procurement clerk positions may be filled if the following requirements are met; an applicant must have at least high school diploma or equivalent. An applicant should be computer literate of related computer programs used for purchasing or proficient in the use of spreadsheet. Experienced applicants have higher chances of employment and promotion. Some applicants can be hired and learn the clerical function on the job while being supervised by a supervisor or any experienced worker. Some workers with a higher educational attainment and experience may be promoted to a higher position.

Procurement jobs in many cities are a lucrative career enjoying a 10% growth in some industries. According to the latest median income forecast, a procurement clerk may receive an annual salary of between $38,000 up to $54,000 dollars depending on the experience, education, industry, and the size of the company.
